New York State generally has a humid continental climate with significant variation over the year. Wintry temperatures in January and February average below freezing with New York City in the northern fringe of a humid subtropical climate. Summer temperatures prevail from June to August statewide and on average, the western side of New York state is cloudier than the southeast. The significant urbanization within New York City has led to temperatures being warmer overnight all year round as it has turned into an urban heat island.
Precipitation is brought to New York by a range of things throughout the year. Extra-tropical cyclones contribute much to the precipitation to the region from fall spring while large complexes of thunderstorms can invade the state during Summer. Tropical cyclones can also bring rains and winds from the southwest during summer and fall months. Hurricanes are rare in this state while an average of ten tornadoes can occur annually.
